The Broad Institute is a joint venture between MIT and Harvard focused on genomics. Feng Zhang and David Liu both work there, which means CRISPR in human cells, base editing and prime editing all have roots in the same building. It is also a party to the long-running CRISPR patent dispute.

Founded in 2004, the Broad Institute is a biomedical and genomic research centre affiliated with MIT and Harvard. Its laboratories produced foundational work on CRISPR editing in mammalian cells, base editing, prime editing, Cas12 and Cas13 characterisation, and large-scale functional genomics. It holds contested patents on CRISPR editing in eukaryotic cells.
