Natural CRISPR proteins evolved to defend bacteria, not to treat humans, so Scribe rebuilds them — smaller, more accurate, and easier to deliver. Its engineered CasX-derived editors are designed around the constraints of getting into human cells rather than around what bacteria happened to evolve.
Scribe Therapeutics was founded in 2018 by Jennifer Doudna, Benjamin Oakes, Brett Staahl and David Savage. Its X-Editing platform is built on engineered CasX (Cas12e) variants selected for compact size, specificity and delivery compatibility. The company works largely through partnerships, including cardiovascular and neurological programmes.
