Tessera works on a different idea from most editing companies: rather than changing letters, insert whole working sequences using natural machinery that already moves DNA around. That would matter most for diseases where the gene is too large or the mutations too varied for letter-by-letter approaches.
Tessera Therapeutics, founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering, develops Gene Writing technology based on engineered retrotransposons and related mobile elements capable of inserting kilobase-scale sequence. Programmes span sickle cell disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and phenylketonuria; the work remains preclinical.
