Sana's central idea is not editing a patient's genes but hiding transplanted cells from the patient's immune system. Remove the markers the immune system inspects, add a signal that says 'friendly', and donor cells may survive without the powerful drugs transplant patients usually need. Early work in type 1 diabetes showed transplanted insulin-producing cells surviving without immunosuppression.
Sana Biotechnology develops hypoimmune cell platforms, knocking out B2M and CIITA to remove MHC class I and II and overexpressing CD47 to inhibit innate clearance. Programmes span type 1 diabetes and allogeneic cell therapies; results in the New England Journal of Medicine reported survival and insulin production from hypoimmune allogeneic islet cells without immunosuppression.
